Phillies were founded in 1883, they have been the longest team in the same city in history of all sports. Also, between franchises having played enough all time games to have eliminated most statistical anomalies, they are the most horrible team in the record of all American sports.
Originally named for spoken shorthand of their city of residence "Philly". Phillies did replaced the Worcester from Massachusetts after they were kicked out from the league. First owners were John Rodgers and Al Reach. The Phillies only had four strong winning periods. First one was in 1890s, when they had one of the best outfields of all time Delahanty, Thompson and Hamilton.
The 1894 team had all time highest batting average, but they finished in low rankings because pitching wasn’t strong enough. Phillies still tried hard throughout the years but weren’t good enough to win a championship or even do anything major.
In 1915 Phillies won National League Pennant and tried for another three. At that time they had Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Alexander and also hitting stars such as Gavvy Cravath and Sherry Magee.
In the late 70s and 80s, Phillies won quite few division titles and 2 pennants in 1980 and 1983. They did win World Series in 1980. This was the only World Series Phillies won and it still stands that way in 121 year history.
When Mike Schmidt retired in 1989, Phillies had a losing streak for a while, until 1993.
In 1993 they finally made it to World Series again, but at that time they had lots of good players such as Curt Schilling, Lenny Dykstra. But they just couldn’t beat Toronto Blue Jays. It was a big disappointment for them.
Since the players went on strike in 1994 Phillies haven’t had a good season in playing and also with fans. Then came Atlanta Braves, when they joined the league in 1994 and they were on top in the division and it was just getting harder and harder for Phillies to win. Since 1993 World Series Phillies best winning season was right behind NY Mets in second place. Which doesn’t really help but lets hope 2005 season will be better for them and maybe they can win something this years.
