Oakland Athletics is one of four teams in the West Division of the American League. Formerly based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Kansas City, and Missouri, the A’s play at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland, CA, and wear uniforms of white, yellow, and green. The A’s have enjoyed success in every decade since their birth in 1901.

The team’s first manager and owner, Connie Mack, took the club to nine AL pennants and five World Series titles during his 50-year career. Among the Hall of Famers that Mack managed were Frank Baker, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins, Lefty Grove, Napoleon Lajoie, and Al Simmons. In the 1970s Oakland built some of the best teams in major league. Led by Vida Blue, Bert Campaneris, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, and Joe Rudi, Oakland won five strait division titles and three World Series championships with in four years.

Tony LaRussa led the A’s to three straight AL pennants from 1988 to 1990 with

sluggers José Canseco, Mark McGwire, and Rickey Henderson. From 1988 to 1992 the A’s took four division crowns, three AL pennants, and one World Series title with manager Tony LaRussa. Starring on those teams were Mark McGwire, José Canseco, and Rickey Henderson. Dennis Eckersley and Dave Stewart were the starring pitchers. Even though an earthquake delayed the 1989 World Series, Oakland’s well-balanced offense and defense swept the San Francisco Giants.
Oakland's lineup crumbled in the 1990s, as LaRussa left the team and Canseco, Henderson, McGwire, Eckersley, and Stewart followed as well, in trades, as free agents, or to retirement. From 1992 to 1993 the club went from first to last in the West Division. However, a group of young players led by MVP Jason Giambi brought Oakland back, and the club took the AL West in 2000.
