    St. Louis Cardinals are a professional Baseball team located in Saint Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals had one of the well known baseball players such as Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander. Pete was one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He pitched for 20 years (1911 - 1930) and won 373 games, tied for third most ever. From 1915 through 1917 he won 30 or more games three years in a row, a stretch that included an outstanding 36 shutouts.

     Yet Alexander's prickly personality and well-publicized off- the-field exploits -including an ongoing battle with alcoholism- kept the fans at a distance. It also contributed to his being traded several times in his carrier, rare for such a great talent at that time. In fact, today he might be remembered more for his failings than for his successes, if not for his spectacular performance with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1926 World Series, when no one expected anything from him.

     Alexander, nearing the end of his career at age 39, found a kindred spirit in Cardinals second baseman- manager Rogers Hornsby in 1926. While others whispered that Ol 'Pete was through, Hornsby was willing to give him another chance. And Alexander came through, winning nine games for the Cardinals during the regular season and helping the team capture its first National league pennant since 1888.

     The Cardinal's opponent in the 1926 World Series was a fearsome one: Babe Ruth's New York Yankees. Accompanying Ruth were Hall of Famers Lou Gehring, Tony Lazzeri, Earle Combs, Waite Hoyt, and Herb Pennock - one of the greatest accumulations of ballplayers in history. It seemed a lot to expect of Pete Alexander and the Cinderella Cardinals to match the Yankees' lineup.
